Welcome to the Jiang Group

We use chemistry and materials science to innovate technological solutions to energy, sustainability, and climate-related challenges.

Our science is inspired by nature, driven by curiosity, and addresses the "who cares"

Science exists in everyday life: a little zap touching a metal doorknob is an example of electrostatics; electric motors operate based on the interaction between a magnetic field and an electric current; life is made of nitrogen- and carbon-containing building blocks, and half of world’s population depends on synthetic fertilizers.

Creativity emerges from being curious about the what-ifs and thinking with an interdisciplinary mind. Our team takes the unconventional approach of harnessing electrostatics energy to make essential chemicals on the ground and rescue the ozone hole in the sky. We innovate ionic motors, ionic communication and transmission methods that are complementary to today’s electronic technologies. We integrate science with engineering to develop technological solutions to energy-, sustainability-, and climate-related challenges.

To Decarbonize the Chemical Industry, Electrify it!

Synthetic nitrogen fertilizer produced by the Haber-Bosch process provides food security for half of the global population (4 billion people) today. However, this industrial process accounts for 1.4% of global CO2 emissions, 1-2% of the world’s total energy consumption, and nearly 40% of world’s hydrogen fuels every year. Using a combination of radical chemistry, catalysis, and reactive surfaces, our group designs green and scalable methods to electrify the chemical industry.
